SAS vs. SATA — 4TB Drive Compatibility Guide
Buyers frequently ask whether a SAS drive will work in a SATA slot and vice versa. Here's the quick answer and what to check before you order.
Interface Directionality
SAS controllers are backward-compatible with SATA drives — a SAS/SATA dual-domain backplane can accept SATA drives (always verify the backplane spec sheet first).
SATA controllers are NOT compatible with SAS drives — a SATA-only backplane or port cannot electrically negotiate the SAS protocol.
Rule of thumb: SAS controller → SATA drive ✓ (with dual-domain backplane) | SATA controller → SAS drive ✗
Controller & Backplane Check
Before purchasing, confirm:
Your server/enclosure backplane is labeled SAS/SATA (dual-domain) or SATA-only.
Your HBA or RAID controller supports the protocol of the drive you're adding.
Firmware and driver versions are current — some controllers limit SATA drives to specific slots.
Form Factor & Connector
SAS: 29-pin SFF-8482 connector (dual-domain backplanes also accept SATA); available in 3.5" LFF and 2.5" SFF.
SATA: 7-pin data + 15-pin power (L-shaped); fits SATA-only bays only; also available in 3.5" LFF and 2.5" SFF.
Always match the bay size (LFF vs. SFF) to your enclosure.
Speed
SAS 12Gb/s: up to 1,200 MB/s sustained; designed for 24/7 enterprise and data center workloads.
SATA 6Gb/s: up to 600 MB/s; ideal for desktops, NAS, and light server use.
Always Verify Your Server Model
Pull your server's QuickSpecs or Hardware Compatibility List (HCL) and confirm the drive's interface, RPM, and sector size (512e vs. 4Kn) before ordering. When in doubt, contact your server vendor.
